I’m On the Pi!

Yesterday I thought, “I wonder how hard it would be to install WordPress on my Raspberry Pi?”

The answer is: not that hard, apparently! (And, to be fair, the hard stuff was already done by the coders and devs.)

So I’m posting this from WP on my Pi. This will be the home of my blog now. That’s neat! My reasoning behind it is mostly to get away from paying WP for the hosting, because it’s stupidly expensive, and keeping my own WP installation allows me to access plugins without paying out the wazoo for them. But also, this blog isn’t making huge numbers, so I’m fine keeping it “local” just to write some shit, you know?

Hosting it on my Pi really just required a couple of program installations (php and mariadb, and WordPress, of course). I installed Apache thinking I would figure that out, but then I realized I already have Caddy and it works great for acting as a web server, so I looked up if it was possible to host WP using Caddy. Long story short: it is.

My main website (joshbelville.com) is still hosted on Neocities, for now. I could probably move it here but I like the Neocities culture and I like giving them money so they can keep doing what they’re doing. Plus, while it’s highly unlikely that it’s going to get huge bandwidth traction, it’s possible that I could become super popular and famous and I’d rather not stress out my Pi/Comcast if I can help it.

So there you go! Yet another little hobby for ol’ Joshy boy.
